The fiberglass bodywork was manufactured by Fiberfab International and is laid over a square-tube steel chassis fabricated by Classic Motor Carriages. The body is said to have been modified to sit lower on the chassis and the wheel arches were widened before the car was finished in black during the 1990s by Stockdale Hot Rod paint in California. Under current ownership a scratch atop the driver-side door was repaired.
Features include a chrome-finished roll bar, a hood scoop, contoured mirrors, wing windows, a tubular rear bumper, and side pipes. The seller notes stone chips in the nose, waviness in the doors, a blemish in the right-rear quarter panel, swirls in the finish, and cracks in the paint on the passenger-side fender vent as well as the trunk lid. The car is not equipped with a top.
Gray spline-drive 17″ wheels with polished outer lips show Buddy Bar and Cobra castings, and they are mounted with three-ear knock-offs. The Halibrand-style wheels are wrapped in 225/45 front and 255/40 rear BFGoodrich Comp T/A tires. The four-wheel disc braking system utilizes polished four-piston front calipers paired with Wilwood rear calipers in addition to Wilwood parking-brake calipers. The car also is equipped with adjustable coilovers and Heidts polished tubular control arms, and the seller notes that the rack-and-pinion steering and the brakes are unassisted.
The interior features contoured seat cushions and tan leather upholstery. Lighter square-weave carpeting covers the floors, and red-tinted visors are available to the driver and passenger. The shifter and the parking-brake lever have leather boots, and a cut-off switch is positioned between them. The battery is located behind the seat, where the roll bar is triangulated with curved members. The seller notes wear in the driver-side carpeting, and spots from a sprayed product are visible around the driver door hinge. Some of the weatherstripping has deteriorated.
A wood-rimmed Lecarra steering wheel sits heads of Stewart-Warner instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer and an 8k-rpm tachometer in addition to four auxiliary gauges. A battery gauge lies to the left of the steering wheel, and a clock is mounted ahead of the passenger. The five-digit odometer shows 3k miles, approximately 1k of which have been added by the current owner. Custom switchgear is located in a polished panel ahead of the shifter, and the seller notes an “orange peel” appearance in the dash along with wear on the steering wheel.
The fuel filler is located in the trunk, which is trimmed along with the underside of the trunk lid in square-weave carpeting to match the interior. Stains are noted in the trunk floor, and the lid does not stay up on its own.
The big-block Ford FE 428ci V8 was built in the late 1990s and was installed by Magnum Force. Features include a four-barrel Edelbrock carburetor with an electric choke, an MSD ignition system, tubular exhaust headers, and finned Cobra Le Mans–script valve covers. A System 1 fuel filter, an electric fan, an aluminum radiator cover, and an oil cooler in the nose also are utilized. The carburetor is said to have been replaced recently, and in preparation for the sale the oil was changed and the air cleaner was replaced. The seller notes that the hood seal has deteriorated, and corrosion can be seen near the cap of the expansion tank.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a Richmond five-speed manual transmission and a 9″ axle. Additional photos of the underside are presented in the gallery below.
Build photos are provided at the end of the gallery, which indicate that the chassis was partially assembled by January 1995.
A Fiberfab International option sheet, purchase agreement, assembly booklet, and included manuals are also pictured below.
An uninstalled Fiberfab International identification tag is included with the car. A “body number” tag affixed to the frame reads 5Y83Z119776 and is the sequence used as the VIN on the California title, which lists the car as a 1965 Ford. That chassis number is consistent with Ford’s numbering standards for a 1965 Thunderbird 390ci coupe. A redacted image of the title is provided in the gallery.
