The 250 GT coupe was introduced in prototype form at the 1956 Geneva Motor Show with styling and construction by Pinin Farina, who in turn contracted Carrozzeria Boano to handle assembly in order to meet production demands. The 250 GT coupe was introduced in prototype form at the 1956 Geneva Motor Show with styling and construction by Pinin Farina, who in turn contracted Carrozzeria Boano to handle assembly in order to meet production demands. After Mario Boano’s 1957 departure to run Fiat’s styling division, responsibility for the 250 GT’s coachwork was handed to Boano’s son-in-law Ezio Ellena and partner Luciano Pollo. Design changes during Ellena’s production run included the addition of 2” to the height of the roof as well as deletion of the front quarter vent windows.
This high-roof example was repainted in red with dark gray rockers prior to current ownership, and areas of crazing and chipping on the frontal surfaces are shown up close in the photo gallery below. Cracks are present in the windshield, and a replacement windshield housed in a crate is included in the sale. Features include grille-mounted Marchal fog lamps, a wraparound rear window, tail fins, a driver-side Talbot mirror, Scuderia Ferrari shield decals, and quad Megs exhaust outlets. Graphics from the California Mille and Louis Vuitton Classic China Run remain affixed to the doors.
Chrome Borrani wire wheels are secured by three-eared knock-offs and are wrapped in 6.00-16 Dunlop Racing tires that are said to have been mounted in 1989. Stopping is handled by finned alloy drums at each corner with duplex actuation up front. Four of the wheel cylinders are said to have been rebuilt in preparation for the sale, although the seller notes that the brake shoes drag due to swelling of the shoe linings and that the brake system will require further servicing. The left-rear wheel hub is said to be worn and in need of replacement.
The cabin is trimmed in black vinyl over two-place seating with color-matching upholstery over the door panels, center tunnel, and rear shelf. Additional features include red carpeting with black binding, an offset shifter with a wood knob, leather rear luggage straps, and a roll bar. Areas of wear on the passenger-side grab handle and sun visor are shown in the gallery below.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel sits ahead of Veglia instrumentation including a 300-km/h speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, a clock, and gauges monitoring fuel level, oil pressure, oil temperature, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 97k kilometers (~60k miles), approximately 2,500 of which have been added under current ownership.
The 3.0-liter Tipo 128C V12 features spark plugs positioned at the inside of each cylinder bank, triple Weber 36 DCL3 carburetors, and twin distributors. The engine was overhauled in 1987 by FAF Motorcars in Georgia at approximately 93k kilometers, with work including boring of the block and installation of 73.30mm-bore pistons. An electric cooling fan is fitted ahead of the radiator, while modifications to the lubrication system include a remote full-flow oil filter, an oil cooler, and an Accusump oil accumulator. The battery was replaced in preparation for the sale.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission and a solid rear axle that was modified under previous ownership with a Dana 44 center section. According to the seller, the rear end houses a limited-slip differential with 4.56:1 gearing. Hydraulic lever-arm shock absorbers are utilized with the coil-sprung double-wishbone front suspension as well as the leaf-sprung rear. The seller notes that exhaust repairs will be required at the base of the header collectors. A rear frame crossmembers was cut to accommodate the replacement driveshaft, and a reinforcement plate was welded underneath.
Chassis number 0839 GT is shown stamped on the engine block above, as is internal number 0162C. Number 0839 GT is also shown stamped on the timing cover in the gallery below, and transmission number 57C is shown stamped on the gearbox.
