Refurbishment of the body and chassis was completed throughout 2019. Chassis work was conducted by a Porsche 356 specialist and included replacing the rear seat buckets, battery box, engine compartment sheet metal, door bottoms, and front floor pans using factory specification panels. Bodywork included panel work, applying sealant and undercoating, and refinishing the body in the factory shade of Light Ivory. The windshield was replaced under prior ownership. Chromed parts were replaced as necessary, and the majority of the brightwork said to be original was stripped and re-plated. Exterior equipment includes body-color bumpers with chrome bumper guards, a driver’s side mirror, optional fog lights, rocker trim, twin engine-cover grilles, and exhaust outlets integrated into the rear overriders.
Chrome 15″ wheels are date-stamped 1964 and wear the Porsche crest on their hubcaps along with 165-series Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. New Koni shocks and refreshed disc brakes are found at all four corners.
The cabin was reupholstered in red vinyl with a matching dashboard pad and door panels. Interior equipment includes red square weave carpets, perforated headliner, standard rubber flooring, supplemental matching carpet floor mats, a Les Leston steering wheel adorned with a Porsche crest on the horn ring, a wood shift knob, a locking glove box, a heater, and a period-correct replacement Becker Europa radio. The seller notes the factory VDO clock is inoperable, while the washer fluid foot pump and the plumbing are not installed.
Green-letter VDO instrumentation is said to be original and includes a central 7k-rpm tachometer with a 6k-rpm redline, a 120-mph speedometer, and a combination gauge that contains oil temperature, fuel level, and warning lights. The five-digit odometer shows 95k miles, 500 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 616/16 flat-four underwent a bottom-end rebuild and received 1,720cc pistons and jugs. As part of the rebuild, cylinder head work was also performed by a Porsche specialist. The dual Solex carburetors are equipped with Knecht-style mesh air cleaners that have internal velocity stacks. The most recent service in September 2022 consisted of changing the engine break-in oil and filter.
The engine stamping P*812746* is shown above and matches the Kardex. Transaxle stamping 81440 is shown in the gallery below and also matches the Kardex.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle, which had the syncros replaced in April 2021. Additional underbody images are available in the gallery below.
A copy of the Kardex lists the production date, factory colors, factory options, powertrain numbers, and delivery to Norman Anderson Motors in San Jose, California.
A workshop manual is included in the sale, along with literature, service records, a jack and lug wrench, and multiple keys.
