The Maserati Merak was styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign and was introduced at the 1972 Paris Motor Show. The SS was introduced in 1975 and featured a black front hood grille. This example was been repainted red and features body-color bumpers, rear flying buttresses, dual side-view mirrors, and pop-up headlights that can be seen raised in the gallery. Paint loss and bubbles on the passenger door bottom can also be seen in the gallery, and the power antenna and power-adjustable driver-side mirror control do not work.
The 15″ Campagnolo wheels wear trident center caps and are mounted with 215/60 front and 235/60 rear Pirelli P600 tires. The Merak features a fully independent suspension, and stopping power is provided by ventilated discs at all four corners. The front brake calipers were machined and new front pads were fitted in August 2022.
The cabin features front bucket seats and two-place rear seats trimmed in black leather along with a color-coordinated dashboard, center console, door panels, and carpets. Features include power windows, a Blaupunkt AM/FM/eight-track player, a locking glovebox, and a front passenger footrest. The air-conditioning system does not work, and wear on the driver’s seat outer bolster can be seen in the gallery.
The leather-wrapped steering wheel frames Veglia Borletti instrumentation including a 200-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 23k miles. The speedometer was inoperative and repaired approximately 20 years ago. True mileage is unknown.
The 3.0-liter 90-degree V6 features triple Weber DCNF 44 carburetors and a 9:1 compression ratio in SS specification for a factory rating of 220 horsepower at 6,500 rpm. The spark plugs and fuel pump were replaced 10 years ago, and an oil change was performed in 2022. It is unknown when the car last received a major service, and maintenance is recommended by the selling dealer prior to use.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transaxle.
The chassis plate lists serial number AM122-US2314, and the VIN on the title is listed as AM122AUS2314. The last four digits, 2314, are shown stamped on a door jamb tag in the gallery.
