Wider 16″ GNX wheels feature black basketweave centers and polished lips. Goodyear Eagle VR50 tires were specified by the factory. Front suspension components were unchanged from those of the standard Grand National, while rear upgrades consisted of a Panhard rod and torque arm as well as an additional frame crossmember.
The seats and door panels are trimmed in black and silver cloth upholstery. Embroidered Grand National logos are found on the headrests and floor mats, which protect matching carpets. A plaque mounted to the dash lists this car as #161 of the 547 produced.
Amenities include power windows and locks, air conditioning, and a Delco cassette player with a five-band graphic equalizer. A leather-wrapped steering wheel frames Stewart Warner instruments including a boost gauge, a tachometer, and a 160-mph speedometer with a five-digit odometer that shows 3,400 miles. Approximately 25 miles have been driven by the seller in five years.
The 3.8-liter V6 was tuned with input from McLaren Engines of Livonia, Michigan, and featured a larger Garrett T3 turbocharger, a larger intercooler with insulated plumbing, ported and polished cylinder heads, revised ECU programming, and a low-restriction dual exhaust system when compared with the standard car. Output of 276 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque was quoted in period, and the GNX achieved respective 0-60 and and 1/4 mile times of 4.7 and 13.5 seconds in contemporary testing.
The 200-R4 four-speed automatic transmission was fitted with a revised valve body and a larger oil cooler from the factory. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a solid axle with a limited-slip differential.
Documentation includes Regal owner’s manuals, a GNX supplement, letters from ASC and Molly Designs, a 2016 appraisal, and a window sticker from Lee A. Folger, Inc. listing factory equipment and a 1987 MSRP of $29,290.
