The Unimog 419 was classified as a Small Emplacement Excavator and was used by the US Army as an engineering vehicle. This example is finished in drab green and equipped with a detachable hydraulically-operated front-end loader and a rear-mounted backhoe that folds on the back of the truck. Additional equipment includes storage lockers, work lights, a snorkel, and a roof guard. Areas of rust-through are visible below the headlights, along with various cracking hydraulic hoses and corrosion on the buckets, outriggers, and rear platform. A hydraulic pavement breaker is stored a locker on the right side.
Body-color 20” steel wheels are mounted with Michelin X tires that show cracking. A full-size spare is mounted behind the cab. Braking is handled by four-wheel discs.
The cab features low-back seats upholstered in black vinyl, as well as controls for the gearbox, transfer case, and accessories. Amenities include lap belts, flip-down sun visors, quarter vent windows, and a right-side grab handle. The turn signal lever is broken, and the driver’s seat upholstery is torn.
A two-spoke steering wheel fronts instrumentation that includes an 80-mph speedometer, a 3,200-rpm tachometer, a combination gauge, and a voltmeter. An analog inclinometer is mounted atop the dash. The six-digit odometer shows approximately 196 miles, approximately 175 of which have been added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.
The 5.7-liter Mercedes-Benz OM352 diesel inline-six is mated to a four-speed manual transmission with a hi/low range and splitter, delivering sixteen forward gears and eight reverse gears. Maintenance in September 2022 is said to have included fluid changes as well as replacing the fuel line strainer cage.
Power is sent to all four wheels through a dual-range transfer case, locking differentials, and portal axles. Corrosion is visible on the underbody components.
